In our most challenging moments, one of the first people,
we turn to is family. For many of us, our parents, sisters and brothers are our
support system when life becomes hard to bear.
We turn to them because we know they will be there for us, regardless of
the situation we are in.
I have spent many days, recently, thinking about the
difference this makes in life. I’ve found that the faith we have in ourselves
is a reflection of the faith we have in our family. Knowing that they are there
for us gives us the confidence and strength to be our best selves, even in our
darkest hour. It’s an invisible force -- one that you may not even know is
working. But you can feel it. It’s the warmth of your sister’s hand as she
reaches out to comfort you. It’s the strength of a hug from mom on your worst
day. Or the rare smile from dad. Knowing that we can trust this love to be
there for us allows us to see and believe the best in ourselves.
Understanding this concept is pivotal to our relationship
with others, and with God. Have you ever met a very distrustful person? They
are often people who have experienced disappointment from someone close to
them. It taints their view of all those they come into contact with. Family is
our introduction to mankind, if we can’t trust those who share our blood, how
can we trust others?
How can we trust ourselves?
It becomes difficult to believe in ourselves and our
relationships if the very first people we trusted let us down. This is where
the restorative power of faith in God comes in. God never lets us down. God
never walks away from us. God never says “I don’t love you.” Our faith in His
ability to support us allows believers to walk tall in the face of
adversity. It’s also what enables us to
believe in ourselves, giving new meaning to the verse “I can do all things
through Christ, which strengtheneth me.”
As believers, we know that at the end of it all
someone loves us. Faith in that love gives us the confidence to achieve
whatever we put our minds to. We should strive to love each other just as much
– fiercely, unconditionally, completely.
